The common deck of playing cards has existed in one form or another since the 16th century. Ever since, sleight-of-hand artists have been doing tricks with them. For two-time world champion of magic Shawn Farquhar, these 52 cards are both an obsession and his occupation. As he starts conjuring ideas for a new trick, he becomes enamoured by the origins of the cards, in particular the King of Hearts, sometimes known as the Suicide King due to the sword embedded in his skull. Embarking on his quest to delve deeper into this mystery, Farquhar visits some of the world’s most famous card technicians, gleefully observing their best illusions and incorporating elements of these exceptional plots into his new act. Hidden in the cards are the clues to an unsolved 500-year-old murder case.
